چکیده

Chromium is one of the most toxic heavy metals which reduces the growth of plants at relatively low concentrations, whereas IAA, kinetin, GA3 and 24-epibrassinolide (24-epiBr) are well known plant growth regulators (PGRs) which enhance the growth of plants. The present study was undertaken to determine the effect of binary combinations of Cr(VI) and PGRs on Spirodela polyrrhiza (L.) Schleiden, an aquatic macrophyte, grown on Hoagland’s E-media. We observed that Cr(VI) at 1, 2 and 3 mM in the absence of exogenous PGRs significantly decreased the growth of plants, whereas IAA, kinetin, GA3 (0.1, 10, 1000 nM) and 24-epiBr (0.01, 1, 100 nM) in the absence of Cr(VI) significantly increased the growth. Multiple regression models revealed that Cr(VI) inhibits the activity of exogenous PGRs leading to a further decrease in the growth of S. polyrrhiza cultured in binary combinations of Cr(VI) and PGRs. _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

The abscisic acid induction of a novel peroxidase is antagonized by cytokinin in Spirodela polyrrhiza L.

The growth regulator abscisic acid (ABA) can be used to induce dormant bud structures (turions) in the duckweed Spirodela polyrrhiza L. In this paper we show that during this process, ABA rapidly induces elevated levels of mRNA transcripts encoding a novel basic peroxidase. In addition, we show that in the presence of the cytokinin kinetin the maintained increase is attenuated. Kinetin not only...

Turion Induction in Spirodela polyrrhiza by Abscisic Acid.

In an earlier publicationi (2) we found that dormant bodies called turions can be induced in some clones of Spirodela polyrrhiiza (L.) Schleid. by a number of environmental manipulations. WVe nlOw report the formation of turions under nioninductive environmental conditions 1b abscisic acid (ABA) in concentrations as low as 0.01 /.g/ml within 10 days. Clones of Spirodela polyrrhiza were grown in...

Isolation and characterization of 3-nitrophenol-degrading bacteria associated with rhizosphere of Spirodela polyrrhiza.

INTRODUCTION The accelerated biodegradation of 3-nitrophenol (3-NP) in the rhizosphere of giant duckweed (Spirodela polyrrhiza) was investigated. MATERIALS AND METHODS Biodegradation of 3-nitrophenol in the rhizosphere of a floating aquatic plant, S. polyrrhiza, was investigated by using three river water samples supplemented with 10 mg l(-1) of 3-NP. Isolation and enrichment culture of 3-NP-...

Effects of CO(2) and O(2) on the Photosynthetic O(2) Evolution of Spirodela polyrrhiza Turions.

Net photosynthetic rates of Spirodela polyrrhiza turions, at low O(2) levels, were 6.2 and 38.8 micromoles O(2) per gram fresh weight per hour at 1 millimolar HCO(3) (-) and CO(2) saturation, respectively, and much lower in a regular low-pH growth solution. Air equilibration O(2) concentrations decreased rates considerably, except at CO(2) saturation. The surfacing rate of turions in various in...
